1 About the Course
This course will give you the opportunity to investigate a career in the catering, hospitality and bakery industry.
You will have the chance to learn some food preparation and cooking skills and gain an insight into college life and career advice.

2 What will I study?
You will learn how to prepare and cook food to produce;
· Soups and sauces
· Dishes involving meat
· Vegetables and salads dishes
· Confectionery and desserts
Taking into account Health and Safety issues.
In addition you will have help with interviewing and learn skills for working in the industry.

3 What do I need to join the course?
The course is open to everybody over the age of 14. You will need to be interested in preparing and cooking food, and on some occasions eating it. Be prepared to wear an apron and wash up after yourself when the cooking is complete.

4 What qualifications will I gain?
This will depend on your ability and the amount of time you spend on your course. If you attend all of your classes and you complete the work set by your tutor you will achieve the BTEC Skills for Working Life qualification in Catering or an NVQ in food preparation and cooking.

5 Will I need to purchase anything for the course?
No, everything will be provided. If you wish to take the food home there could be a charge to cover the costs.

6 What can I do next?
If you wish to continue your studies and train to higher level you could progress to NVQ level 1- 2 in Food Preparation and Cooking / Food Service, Bakery NVQ level 1 - 2 or BTEC National Certificate in Catering.

7 Career opportunities
At the age of 16 you could join a full time course or an apprenticeship programme in catering, bakery or hotel reception.
Once you have gained these qualifications you could progress to become a Chef or Baker working;
· in hotels restaurants or bakeries.
· On board ocean liners,
· working abroad or
· running your own business
